The Fantasy Art Techniques Of Tim Hildebrandt
                                             (1991 - Paper Tiger)

(by Jack E. Norton)    Of our Hildebrandt grouping, this one is from the perspective of Tim Hildebrandt, and speaks to its audience mainly as an instructive narrative into his many choices in regards to his craft, career and actual logistics of his creations.  Other than the index, foreword, afterword and the 18-page introduction, the chapters are entitled: Influences & Resources, Concept & Composition, Black & White, Paintings & Color, Presentation, and Conclusion.  As you can imagine, that develops plenty of opportunity to display Tim's art (and a handful of pieces created with brother Greg).  Out of the 157 pages, 127 of them exhibit a featured painting or drawing, while another 11 each gather together more than a single image.  Amid all that, 28 pages are utilized for 14 larger works that are laid over the book's center (all remain acceptable in that presentation).  You'll find here lots of fantasy, but also a healthy amount of science-fiction, humor and other genres, much of it commercial, but some personal pieces as well.  Everything is captioned with a title, client, medium and original use it was put to (I'd observe that they could have been a bit more assiduous with the latter, especially in book identification).  Most captions have some commentary, again, much in an educational vein.  Well worth having.  Presentationally, the Hildebrandt's STAR WARS book ranks higher, but know that nothing from it repeats here.
