Burne Hogarth:  Dynamic Light And Shade
                                             (1981 - Watson-Guptill Publications)

This is first and foremost an instructional book (one of several) written by the illustration legend.  But, out of its 160 pages, more than 50 of them feature single large reproductions of art work and a bit more than that again are pages filled with multiple images.  And not just his works, but also some of those by other artists. There are well-presented examples found here by Albrecht Dürer, Jerry Robinson (2) and H.M. Stoops (2).  Anyway, gathered to be examples of lighting problems and solutions, it makes for a very eclectic collection of Hogarth's works, commercial, historical and fantasy.  Having a number of his impressive late-career Tarzan drawings doesn't hurt either.  I would say that even the non-artist would enjoy the thoughts & explanations about what's going on that accompany nearly every image.  Less fortunate is the use of double-page spreads of which only a quarter of the 16 examples are successful.
