Fantastic Science Fiction Art  1926-1954
                                             (1975 - Ballantine Books)

(edited by Lester Del Rey)  (subtitled "The Art Of Science Fiction - From Frank R. Paul To Frank Kelly Freas")   I'll reveal here that this was the first artbook for me, the one the young sci-fi reading adolescent looked at longingly in the bookstore during every visit, until it was finally received as a gift from the parents (who needed a little more time before being ready to buy their son the just-as-desired concurrent first Frazetta book, with its bevy of shapely & barely-clad femmes . . .).  So here are 40 full-color plates reproduced from the pulp-magazine covers themselves, faced with a blank page with only a caption identifying the art and it's source, including the story & author, if a direct illustration.  The editor, Lester Del Rey, contributes an eight-page essay on the sci-fi pulps developing from the electronic & gadget publications of the time, rather than story magazines as the rest of the pulps did.  He details many of the magazines and how their publication philosophy shaped the depictions that appeared on their covers.  The 'well-presented' artists are:  Earle Bergey (5), Howard V. Brown (3), Alexander Caņedo, Kelly Freas (2)*, Robert Fuqua (2), Leo Moray (2), Frank R. Paul (18), Hubert Rogers (2), Alex Schomburg (3)**, Malcolm Smith and H.R. VonDongen.

* - Note that the 'well-presented' pieces here by Freas' cn be found better presented in his own collections further up The List.

** - Note that the 'well-presented' pieces here by Schomburg cannot additionally be found so in his own collections on The List.
