The Dime Detectives
                                             (1988 - The Mysterious Press)

[-BELOW THE LINE-]   (by Ron Goulart)   Ron Goulart has a number of genre-overview books that are lavishly illustrated.  Do not make the mistake of thinking this is one of them.  Only 16 pages are set aside to be used as illustration and none of those are acceptable enough to be considered art pages.  Among the black-and-white images of color pulp magazine covers, you will find a handful of drawings, themselves reproduced from their magazine printings.  Also included there is one page of cartoon-strip sequential art of Sally the Sleuth, who, though she begins the page fully dressed, is reduced to stockings, panties and tattered cloth before the bottom.  Good information on the formulation of the hard-boiled dick, but art, not so much.
