(by Anthony Frewin) Note that one of the several editions of this did not spell out the title, being instead 100 YEARS OF SCIENCE FICTION ILLUSTRATION. This 128-page book has 89 featuring the art - 57 of those spotlighting large reproductions. 18 more unfortunately presented color magazine covers in black-&-white, and another 4 pages displayed the ads you would find in these periodicals. The chapters are: Juggling With Infinity (Jean-Jacques Grandville), Frolics In The Future (Albert Robida), By Pullman Car To Venus (Victorians . . . And Others!), The Pterodactyl Has Gotten Into The Transformer! (Amazing), There Must Be A Scientific Explanation! (Astounding), In A Cosmic(?) Colony, Galaxy Of Startling Marvels, Highways And Byways In . . . Mechanix!, and Small Ad Charivari. While there is in each some introductory narrative, it is in the voluminous captions that is told the real story of Sci-Fi's 1880 publication beginnings through to its then current celebration in the early 1970s. Some readers may be less interested in the numerous engraving-ish illustrations from the first quarter of the time-period, but ultimately there's a pretty good balance of both drawings and full-color pulp magazine covers. Those artists that are 'well-presented' here are: Jack Binder, Howard V. Brown (3), Harry Grant Dart, Elliot Dold (3), Serge Drigin (3), Jean-Jacques Grandville (10), Gordon Grant, Fred T.
