[-BELOW THE LINE-] (by John Clute) A 312-page tome, but illustrated well with art, it is not. There are 15 pages that sport large reproductions of an art piece and another 58 that each has a handful of images. Many of text pages have a sampling of science-fiction book covers, but they are small enough to not be much more than postage stamps. They gave a whole two of those pages to spotlight "Great Illustrators", namely, ten of them: Jim Burns, Philippe Caza, Ed Emshwiller, Virgil Finlay, Frank Kelly Freas, Frank R. Paul, Richard Powers, Wojtek Siudmak, Wesso, and Michael Whelan. So you know that each of them did the one book cover that is next to their name, but almost none of the other artists of the book covers found here are credited. Note that there are another four or so pages that spotlight American & European graphic books. Among the short shrift that artists get here, these are the names of those who get a 'well-presented' piece: E.D. Broch, Albert Drake, Rick Guidice, Winsor McCay (2), Frank R. Paul, Richard Powers*, Malcolm Smith & UNKNOWN (3).
