Visions Of The Future

(edited by Janet Sacks) At 13.5 by 9.5 inches, this book is heading toward the upper limit of easy 'handlability'. It's a collection of illustration and cover paintings from Britain's SCIENCE FICTION MONTHLY magazine. While half of the book's good 70-odd art pages are full-bleed, there are more than a handful of pieces that have been rotated sideways and another handful that have been poorly spread across two pages. Each of the featured artists gets a text intro, sometimes extensive, sometimes not. The subjects and styles are very diverse, making this a fun book to flip through. The artists who are 'well-presented' are: Jim Burns (4)*, Gary Chalk (2), Gareth Colman (2), Lucinda Cowell (2), Gordon C. Davies (2), Roger Dean (2)**, Emlyn Duffy, Ray Feibush (2), Chris Foss (4), Bob Fowke, Bob Haberfield, David A. Hardy (6), G. W. Harrison, Colin Hay, David Higgins (2), Josh Kirby, Bob Layzell, Mike Little (2), Robert McAulay, Ian Miller (3), Kristine Nason, Michael Payne, David Pelham (3), Bruce Pennington (7), Tim White (2)***, and Chris Yates (3).

* - Two of Jim Burns' works are a separated triptych, which is presented as a single piece in his own collection, but is still better here.

** - Note that both of Roger Dean's pieces appear in his own collections higher up on The List, but interestingly, one long piece, taking three pages to display elsewhere, is held concisely to one page here, albiet shrunk.
