Chronicle Books's paperback cover art collections Queer Pulp - Perverted Passions From The Golden Age Of The Paperback Over My Dead Body  [BELOW THE LINE] (1994 / 2001 - Chronicle Books)
Queer Pulp - Perverted Passions From The Golden Age Of The Paperback (2001) (by Susan Stryker) I'd say that most paperbacks presented here are not going to also find their way into the more mainstream book celebrations, though admittedly some of them are clearly well-known, if not for their characters's explorations into non-traditional sexuality. This book is a smaller 7.5-by-10-inch size. Know that the thesis here is about the content of the canvased paperbacks, *not* the impact of their cover art (nor the identification of those creators). While the text, and also displays of photographic covers, take up a significant chunk of this book's 128 pages, over half, 74 pages, could be said to let the art dominate. 43 of those feature some particular paperback cover reproduction in an uncluttered fashion (a handful of those are still smaller than you would want). Then there are the other 31 art pages that pull together two-to-four images. The 'well-presented' artists found here (most identified through the interweb) are: Robert K. Abbett, Gene Bilbrew, Robert Bonfils (3), Carl Corley, Alex Ebel, Ed Emshwiller**, Fred Fixler, John Floherty Jr, Richard Hescox**, Mitchell Hooks, Robert Jonas (2), Lu Kimmel, Robert Maguire (2)***, Stanley Meltzoff, Rudy Nappi, Barye Phillips, Walter Popp, Paul Rader, William Rose, John Schoenherr, Eric Stanton, Ed Valigursky, Doug Weaver, and UNKNOWN (16).
** - Note that Hescox's 'well-presented' piece here cannot additionally be found so in his own collection on The List.
** - Note that Emshwiller's 'well-presented' piece here cannot additionally be found so in his own collection on The List.
*** - Note that in regards to Maguire's 'well-presented' pieces here, some, but not all, can additionally be found so in his own collection on The List.
Over My Dead Body [-BELOW THE LINE-] (1994) (by Lee Server) Subtitled THE SENSATIONAL AGE OF THE AMERICAN PAPERBACK: 1945-1955, I feel that this book, measuring 7.5-by-10 inches, gave the cover art short shrift while embracing its goal of giving an informative overview of the phenomonon (now more than 60 years on). Certainly there seemed no desire to identify the artists for the works that were displayed. The volume is 108 pages and only 26 sport large reproductions (and that's only if you count its own cover image). 15-or-so other pages take an excerpt 'sliver' of the image (featuring some figure or feature) and blow it up to fully span the page, top to bottom, and then beside it, present the full cover at only 1-by-2-inch size. On the remaining pages, the text of Server's essay is focused on more than anything else, though a majority of those pages carry one or two additional covers, but at the same diminutive size. There are captions accompanying the displays, but they usually speak about the authors or the publishers. So, while there isn't enough art on display for the book to get up onto The List, the artists that do get 'well-presented' pieces are: Rudolph Belarski (4), Ann Cantor, Raphael DeSoto*, Freeman Elliott, Renaldo Epworth, Gerald Gregg (2), Mitchell Hooks, Lu Kimmel, Saul Levine, Robert Maguire**, Rudy Nappi, Victor Olson, Bayre Phillips (2), Walter Popp, Mauro Scali, Robert Schulz, Robert Stanley, and UNKNOWN (4).
* - Note that the 'well-presented' piece here by DeSoto can additionally be found so in his own collection up on The List.
** - Note that Maguire's 'well-presented' piece here cannot additionally be found so in his own collection up on The List.
