The Erotic Art Of Reed Waller Not appropriate for children or adolescents. Well more than 100 pages, but this book is low on The List for a number of reasons. First, over 30 pages of sequential-art are in place (and a few design how-to explications). In fact, the eight color pages added for the Fantagraphics 1996 edition are from Waller's strip, GRLZ-R-US (on the plus side, those extra cartoony human pages do provide some much needed variety to the mix). Of the art pages left, 19 are turned sideways, particularly annoying to my tastes. Now you are looking at 80 pages, of which only 35 are full-page reproductions of the artist's work, the rest being multiple image sheets. Finally, it has to be said that 95-percent of the drawings involve Omaha, the comic character that Waller was most known for in the 1990s. With only an exception or two, she is either alone or with her partner, Chuck, which means an incredibly unnecessary lack of diversity. The story-universe was populated with a great deal of characters whose depicted activities would have also been fine under the book's 'erotic' rubric (for that matter, the story put Omaha & Chuck themselves into any number of unfaithful situations . . .). Many, many of the displayed images are very much like the one next to it (though sometimes there are costuming differences). The use of 'funny animals' in an otherwise realistic (and explicit) art style remains striking, all the more reason to keep the younger ones from having access to the publication. other Kitchen Sink Press books The Art Of Will Eisner [BELOW THE LINE] Steve Rude Sketchbook [BELOW THE LINE] SEND US A COMMENT (goes via e-mail - all info kept anonymous, but comment itself may be shared . . .) |
