The Art Of The Fantastic
(1978 - Gerry de la Ree)

(edited by Gerry de la Ree)  The volume is subtitled "An Anthology Of Illustrations From The Collection Of The Editor And Publisher".  Mr. de la Ree was possessed of an incredible collection of original art and luckily for the rest of us, took it upon himself to draw upon it to self-publish an entire cadre of books which he called "The Fantasy Art Series".  While almost all of the others are monographs, this one, as the subtitle suggests, samples from many different artists.  All the pieces are captioned with the origination date, as well as the author & title of the story it illustrates.  There are 128 pages here with 103 being well-presented drawings (though I don't credit a couple of images printed sideways) .  Lynd Ward easily gets the lion's share of attention, as a dozen of those full-page spreads are his, as well as another dozen with multiple images of his art.  The author Robert E. Howard's stories are represented more than any other's throughout the book, with his most famous character, Conan the Barbarian, being rendered by several different artists.  Anyway, those illustrators getting great treatment here are:  Alfredo Alcala, George Barr, Alfred Bethel, Mahlon Blaine (2), Hannes Bok (11), Edd Cartier (3)**, Harry Clarke, Ronald Clyne, J. Watson Davis (4), Boris Dolgov, Gustave Doré, Ed Emshwiller (2)**, Stephen E. Fabian (13)**, Virgil Finlay (7), Frank Kelly Freas (3)**, Ivan Funderburgh, C. Lee Healy (2), Roy Hunt, Tim Kirk (4), Roy Krenkel, Lawrence Sterne Stevens (5), Charlie McGill (5), Perham W. Nahl, Frank R. Paul (7), E. J. Poynter, Frank Upatel (2), Lynd Ward (12), J. R. Weguelin (4), Wally Wood and UNKNOWN ARTIST (2)

** - Note that the 'well-presented' pieces here by Cartier, Emshwiller, Fabian, and Freas, cannot additionally be found so in their own collections on The List.
