Sorayama Hyper Illustrations  1 & 2
                                             (1989 / 1992 - Bijutsu Shuppan-Sha)

Two books of 102 pages with most of them being large presentations of his works of that period.  The fact that nearly all of the art pages are full-bleed makes these tomes outstanding.  Unfortunately, between them there are 20 instances where the art flows over the central gutter, and only three of them are left even close to passing muster.  Several of the pages have two images on them.  Note that there are no titles, nor captions.  There are in both books several pages devoted to exploring the creation of particular artworks from the beginning stages to completion, as well as short interviews with the artist - all the text being written in both English and Japanese.  More than half of each book contains his photo-realistic pin-ups and several of the images are so suggestive of adult themes that I keep the books put away from children.  With the female form being the raison d'etre for these portions, that form is explored in a number of ways - fully-clothed, costumed, lingeried, leathered, latexed, wet, robotic, nude and iconic (Marilyn Monroe makes some appearances).  After that, there is displayed a number of Sorayama's robotic animals, pop portraiture, advertising art and other illustrations.
