The Art Of Emily The Strange
                                             (2009 - Dark Horse Books)

(created by Rob Reger)  Emily and her cats are such strongly designed images that as they appear on page after page, a sense of a lack of diversity sets in, even though many different experiments in style & tone are on display.  But that display is beautiful.  There are 79 pages (of 120) dedicated to single large reproductions of the works and nearly every one of them is a full-bleed image.  There are 13 double-page spreads and all remain satisfying crossing the book's gutter, due as much to their non-realistic busy-ness as to savvy layout.  (There's also a very, very, long fold-out page which is pretty useless).  The name of Rob Reger, and to a slightly lesser extent, that of Buzz Parker, are the ones most closely associated with Emily's development and the art of her world, but the company behind this venture is practically a studio in itself, with a number of other people getting major credit for the creation of some of the pieces here.  Their names are: Tim Biskup, Brian Brooks (2), Grace Fontaine (2), Adele Mildred (3), Mike Moon, Turo Sandagdori (3).  The two page introduction is the only real text present, though a number of pages are given over to photos of the people involved and the development of various expressions of Emily's presence in the world (read: merchandise).
