Arthur Rackham - His Life And Work (1960 - Charles Scribner's Sons)
[-BELOW THE LINE-] (by Derek Hudson) This early book doesn't make it up on 'The List' because little more than a quarter of this 177-page volume could be said to be exhibiting the man's art (48 of them featuring individual works (30 paintings) and two pages of multiple images. Excluding the ten more pages of art turned sideways, you are then left with a very detailed narrative about his life and practices -the chapters: Beginnings, Art School and After, Marriage and Success, Peter Pan and Alice, The Impact of 1914, American Friends, The Last Years, and Epilogue - along with a Foreword, List Of Illustrations, Bibliography, Drawings And Paintings In Collections, and The Printed Work Of Arthur Rackham. A number of Rackham collections have come to print that one imagines are better gallery presentations, but until they are canvassed, it's hard to say yet if any of the exhibits here are gems particularly neglected in all of them.
