First Maitz - Selected Works By Don Maitz From 30 years ago comes Don Maitz's first collection of the magical painted covers he was doing for the fantasy field. The volume also includes science-fiction works, as well as some from the more mundane realm. First, let's detail that 5 pairs of pages are used to present 5 large images, all of which remain unmarred by the center gutter distortion. Then another 31 full-page 'plates' are exhibited, with the facing pages (15 of which have their own spot drawings or preliminaries) containing anecdotes and commentary. There's another couple of pages gathering together multiple images. The captions include the title of the book being illustrated, with the author or editor, the publisher and the size & medium. Be aware that the book's dustjacket displays yet another painting, with its own commentary on one of the flaps. Be aware that all-in-all, this collection pales next to a following volume, DREAMQUESTS, but you are going to want this book too, as there is only one image 'well-presented' there that is found again here. (Well, this dust-jacket image's painting gets featured inside there, too.)
