The Art Of Tom Lovell - An Invitation To History (by Don Hedgpeth & Walt Reed) The backbone of this book is 65 large displays of Lovell's paintings (47-Western, 7-Civil War, 11-other subjects). Two of those are exhibited as fold-outs, and another *41* carry over the book's central-gutter. While I do find that somewhat unsettling, I have to admit that, amazingly, here none of these displays are really that objectionable in that presentation. Anyway, there is then another eight beautifully detailed full-page excerpts from the paintings (three of which themselves are double-page-spreads!). 13 drawings are featured on their own pages and finally worth noting are 24 additional pages with multiple images pulled together (many of them are collections of even more painting-excerpts, obviously smaller, used to open chapters). Many of the paintings illustrate historic episodes, or specific aspects of life back then, and there is copious text that takes the time to give context to those displays. The chapters are: In The Land Of The Buffalo, Strangers In Indian Country, Blood On The Plains, The Civil War, and Tom Lovell-The Artist. This site recommends another book, TOM LOVELL ILLUSTRATOR, before this one, but know that there seem to be only 11 images repeated here from that volume.
