The Amazing Art Of Don Marquez
                                             (2010 - La Grand Ourse)

[-BELOW THE LINE-]    A lot of the art we treasure wouldn't have been preserved in collection-book form, if it wasn't for the simpler, more economical, binding strategy of saddle-stitch.  With that said, this site reflects my own affection for square-bound spines and the clearer bookshelf storage they allow for our volumes.  This book might seem unfairly lowered because of that one idiosyncrasy.  It does not sport the square-bound spine and goes 'below the line' for that reason alone.  Otherwise, it would reside just in the top third of 'The List'.  It has 48 pages and also utilizes back-cover and inner-leaves to give us more of Marquez's fun art.  37 of those pages each feature a nice large reproduction of a painting or drawing with another nine gathering together multiple images, leaving a couple for commentary & a short biography.  For this gathering, we see this artist's love for SF & Fantasy images, which consensus has labeled Retro, with their lost savage worlds and bubble-helmeted space explorers.  Within many of the works, you will recognize thematic 'set-pieces' re-purposed from Frazetta paperbacks and the covers of comics by EC artists - Think homage with humor.  Again, a very fun collection.
