Ron Cobb: Colorvision (1981 - Wild & Woolley)
Some good stuff here, presented nicely. This book has 81 pages, all of them being saturated pastel hues rather than white, really making the works 'framed' on them stand out. 62 of those pages focus on his art-pieces, 47 dedicated to large reproductions and the rest with smaller multiple images. The center section of the book is taken up by his production work on the film ALIEN, including color concept paintings. There is also crisp production work for CONAN THE BARBARIAN, DARK STAR and a bit of alien design for STAR WARS. There are other striking paintings from throughout his career up to that year, including a handful of his single-panel political cartoons. Remaining pages are taken up with more sterile detailed design work, charts, photographs and a biography. All the works are captioned with a title, creation year & medium, along with an occasional anecdote. As this out-of-print book seems a bit pricy on the current market, perhaps someone might start thinking about a larger, updated collection of the man's work.
